It always seems that we wake up at about the same time every night. As it turns out, waking up at 3 am is a very common symptom and everything indicates a specific organ that performs its main functions at 3 am.

In recent years I have been helping customers in health food stores and pharmacies, the most common question about sleep that is often asked is:
“why do I always wake up at 3am ?”
This seems to be a huge problem for people, far more than the real sleep issues they face. Modern diets and lifestyles put a lot of pressure on the body, whether they come from overly fatty foods and refined sugar, or from alcohol or stimulants, or from excessive stress – or a combination of all of these!
One organ in particular that suffers from this type of lifestyle is the liver – and, you guessed it, it is the liver that performs many of its main functions in the early morning hours! The science behind this One thing we need to know is that, according to traditional Chinese medicine, our internal organs work on a 24-hour clock, with certain hours of the day being peak hours for each organ. This is the time when the instrument will perform its most important functions.
The schedule of the organs is as follows:
Large intestine: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Stomach: 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Spleen: 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Heart: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Small intestine: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Bladder: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Kidneys: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Circulation: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Endocrine system / pancreas: 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.
Gallbladder: 11p.m. – 1a.m.
Liver: 1a.m. – 3 a.m.
Lungs: 3a.m. – 5 p.m.
In Chinese medicine, any recurring issues that occur at a particular time of day indicate an imbalance in the corresponding organ. For example, I do not wake up early but I often feel too tired around 6pm and this is due to the fact that my kidney function is weak. As you can see from this program, 1-3am is the time of the liver. One thing the liver needs is energy, which is why it uses glycogen from the body’s sugar stores. The problem is that adrenaline production also uses glycogen, and adrenaline is what we produce when we are stressed and when our blood sugar levels are unstable. So, if you spend all day anxious and your blood sugar levels go up and down, by the time it reaches 1 a.m., there will not be enough glycogen for the cellular regeneration of the liver. In this scenario, the body must produce adrenaline to compensate – and as the adrenaline is designed to keep us awake, we will wake up at this point in time.

The liver does not like alcohol, junk food, too much fatty foods, drugs and painkillers. Limit outings as much as possible and make the last meal of the day lighter so that it does not try to regenerate while dealing with a cheese fondue at the same time. In an ideal scenario, cut out refined sugar and caffeine from the diet or at least cut out caffeine in the afternoon. Stop using smartphones and computers after 8-9pm and try deep breathing or meditation techniques before bed. To reduce stress levels in the body during the day, try passion fruit as well as a magnesium diet supplement the night before.
Balance your blood sugar levels
To better balance your blood sugar, eat regular meals and avoid any type of granulated sugar and carbohydrates such as white bread or pasta, etc. If you feel like eating sugar, eat it. a protein-rich snack – sugar will fool you at first and will temporarily raise your blood sugar levels and they will crash again a little later. Some people who wake up at night may find that they need a small, healthy snack before bed to stop their blood sugar from sinking at 3am. Better try bananas or potatoes.
